Something for Everyone!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

April 25, 26, 27, 2008

The Red Cross needs 1400 pints of blood every day in New England. In Vermont alone, 200 pints are needed daily to make sure blood is available to any patient who needs it. Patients aren't required to find donors to replace the blood they used. It is a community responsibility.

Did you know the need for blood has skyrocketed in the past few years? Our aging population and more sophisticated medical procedures like hip replacements and organ transplants are the reason for this increase, but YOU are the solution.

Blood is the only medicine that can't be manufactured. Its only source is a caring volunteer blood donor.

Blood is used for patients undergoing cancer treatment, premature babies, trauma victims, major surgeries and for people with blood disorders.

You can help eliminate blood shortages by giving blood. And you can give blood every eight weeks. If everyone who is a blood donor gave more than once a year, blood shortages would soon be a thing of the past.

Most people who are in good health can give blood. Basically a donor needs to be at least 17 years old (there's no upper age limit anymore), weigh over 110 pounds and be healthy when they go to donate.

Giving blood, from start to finish, takes about an hour. The actual donation only takes 5 or 10 minutes and it's virtually painless. That's not bad when you consider you're probably helping to save somebody's life.

Look around you right now. Out of every 100 people you see, only 5 give blood on a regular basis. The Red Cross has blood drives every weekday and many opportunities to donate on the weekend. They send the bloodmobile to most every city and town in Vermont. You can call 1-800-GIVE-LIFE or check out their website at newenglandblood.org for more information.

The American Red Cross and the Vermont Maple Festival are partnering up this year in the hope that you'll consider making someone's life a little sweeter. As valuable as our maple syrup is, it can't compare with the wonder that's flowing through your veins.

For Saturday, 4/26 only: If you'd like the opportunity to help save someone's life today, you're in luck! The Red Cross donor bus is parked at the Exhibit Hall at the Maple Festival from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Stop by and let the good folks from the Red Cross "tap" you for a pint. You’ll be glad you did. . .and so will a patient in need!

More good news! Throughout the month of March donors in counties adjacent to the Festival will receive a coupon for a Free Maple Creemee at the Festival. Also, throughout the month of April ALL donors in the VT/NH region will receive a coupon for a free maple creemee at the Festival. AND from April 1 until April 18th, all donors in the VT/NH region will be entered in a drawing for a hand painted sap bucket filled with maple goodies, and tickets to Festival events, a prize valued at more than $150!
